GENERAL PROGRAM INFO
Q: What is the mission and vision of Quince Orchard Wrestling?
A: Our mission is to empower student-athletes for success in wrestling and life through a culture of excellence, resilience, and personal growth. We aim to cultivate champions and leaders on and off the mat.
Q: What values does the QO Wrestling Program emphasize?
A: We emphasize values of excellence, resilience, personal growth, integrity, dedication, and continual improvement in all aspects of the program.
PRACTICES
Q: When and where are practices held?
A: Practices are held after school in the wrestling room.
Q: What should wrestlers bring to practice?
A: Wrestlers should bring wrestling shoes, athletic clothes, a water bottle, and a wrestling headgear. Bringing a positive, focused mindset is just as essential. (*Note: If a wrestler wears braces, a mouth guard protecting both top and bottom teeth is required.
Q: Are practices mandatory?
A: Yes, consistent attendance is crucial for development and team unity. If a wrestler needs to miss practice, they should inform a coach as soon as possible.
COMPETITION AND EVENTS
Q: How does the competition schedule work?
A: Our competition schedule is available on this website under the "Schedule" page. Dual meets typically occur on weekdays, while tri-meets and tournaments are usually on weekends.
Q: How are match lineups determined?
A: Lineups are determined at the coaching staff's discretion, with practice performance as the primary factor. We also consider each wrestler's citizenship and academic standing, as we are committed to having the very best student-athletes represent our program in competition.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Q: How is weight management handled?
A: Our program prioritizes safe weight management practices. All wrestlers are monitored to maintain a healthy, competitive weight through balanced nutrition and proper hydration. Per MCPS guidelines, each wrestler must complete a weight certification process at the start of the season, including a hydration test and body fat analysis to determine a safe minimum weight class. Once certified, this weight class is a fixed minimum for the season.
Q: What are the hygiene expectations for practices and competitions?
A: Wrestlers are expected to shower after each practice and competition, wear clean gear daily, and sanitize any shared equipment. Coaches ensure mats and facilities are cleaned daily.
ACADEMICS
Q: What academic support is available for wrestlers?
A: Academic performance is a priority. We monitor grades, and coaches are available to help set up tutoring or study sessions if needed. Parents should encourage wrestlers to maintain strong academic habits.
Following dismissal at 2:30 PM, wrestlers are expected to use this time productively for completing homework, studying, or meeting with teachers for additional guidance or academic support before practice begins. The classroom adjacent to the wrestling room will be available daily for academic pursuits.
Q: Are there academic eligibility requirements?
A: Yes, wrestlers must meet school academic standards to participate, including a minimum 2.0 GPA as required by MCPS. However, our program sets higher expectations, aiming for each wrestler to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. If a wrestler's GPA falls below this mark, we will initiate intervention steps, including communication with teachers and parents, academic support, and potential penalties, if necessary, to help them stay on track.
COMMUNICATION
Q: How will parents and wrestlers be notified about schedule changes or updates?
A: We use multiple channels to communicate, including email and this website. Please ensure that your contact information is up-to-date.
Q: Who should we contact if we have questions or concerns?
A: For general inquiries, please contact Coach Tyler at tylerjrr@mcpsmd.org.
